UmbilicalOne of the many unique and industry leading aspects of the SeaBotix line of systems is the umbilical. What makes it so unique is the revolutionary small diameter at just 7.6 mm (0.29 in). No longer does a small ROV have to be controlled by its umbilical.

The LBC benefits from this technology greatly increasing not only its capability but its portability. With the reduced drag from the small diameter umbilical the LBC is able to pull the full 150 meter (500ft) length and hold a stable position during ROV mode inspections. Of course when in Crawler Mode the LBC is unaffected by the umbilical.

Here is a chart outlining the effects of umbilical diameter on drag. An absolute calculation is difficult as the drag coefficient is related to the curve in the umbilical in the water. For example the worst case scenario is that the umbilical be vertical creating the highest drag coefficient of 1.2Cd. The following chart uses a more average drag coefficient of 0.6Cd.

An example of umbilical diameter drag comparison:URS175

  • 7.6mm umbilical at 2 knots creates a drag of 17.01lbs
  • 10mm umbilical at 2 knots creates a drag of 22.34lbs
  • 10mm umbilical creates 24% more drag thus the ROV must have 24% more power to overcome the additional drag.

Umbilical Reel
Supplied with the LBC is a convenient and rugged umbilical reel. Constructed from marine grade materials the reel is at home in harsh environments. The umbilical is easily spooled on the reel with the detachable handle. A slip ring is housed behind a waterproof case. Connection to the control system is through the long extension tether spooled on the side of the reel. When not in use the reel packs away nicely in the provided transit case.
